FRENCH-AMERICAN FOUNDATION — UNITED STATESAnnual Report, January-December 2023The power of personal connection is at the core of the Foundation’s flagship Young Leaders Program. In October 2023, the 2022-23 classes of Young Leaders gathered in Strasbourg, France for our annual seminar, exploring iconic historical sites, engaging with prominent local and international leaders, all while growing their leadership skills and deepening their understanding of French-American relations. On October 5th and 6th, FAF-US hosted a 2-day Young Leaders Alumni Reunion in New York City, giving alumni from all classes a chance to meet and reconnect, tune into keynote presentations and small group discussions, and raise a glass in celebration of French-American friendship. Speakers included Carol Bellamy YL’81, former Executive Director of UNICEF; Marc Lacey YL’01, Managing Editor of The New York Times; and Jamie Metzl YL’02, Author and Futurist.With the French-American Foundation – France, we hosted our annual French-American Cyber Security Conference in Washington, D.C., on December 6th and 7th, welcoming a record number of participants. The conference, now in its tenth year, focused on “The Impact of Emerging Technologies in a Dynamic Geopolitical and Cyber Security Global Landscape,” featuring speakers from government, technology, and national security sectors. The Foundation also hosts cyber security webinars throughout the year, including “Geopolitics and Cybersecurity in Ukraine and Beyond” with Dmitri Alperovitch.The Foundation’s Transatlantic Forum, a membership-only group of seasoned professionals interested in contemporary French-American relations, had a busy year. Members meet regularly in New York for dinner and discussions featuring local and global experts. In 2023, we welcomed distinguished speakers Dora Chomiak (President of Razom for Ukraine), Frank Brown (Former Dean, INSEAD), Ravina Advani (Head of Energy & Renewables at BNP Paribas), Tara Varma (Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution), Tracy Sefl (Democratic political consultant), and world-renowned neuroscientist Dr. Moran Cerf. Topics included the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the landscape for women’s rights in the U.S., and global investments in climate change solutions.Our Policy Breakfast series, featuring closed-door discussions with prominent guests of honor, resumed with speaker Philippe Étienne, former Ambassador of France to the United States, discussing the French-American diplomacy and current issues impacting both countries. On the cultural side, the Foundation’s Translation Prize, which honors excellence in French-to-English translation, held its 36th annual awards ceremony in May 2023 at Hearst Tower. We welcomed keynote speaker Alice Kaplan, author, translator, and Sterling Professor of French at Yale University, and honored Juliet Sutcliffe in fiction (for her translation of fiction’s The Music Game by Stefanie Clermont), and Kieran Aarons and Cédrine Michel in nonfiction (for their co-translation of nonfiction’s Self Defense: A Philosophy of Violence by Elsa Dorlin). The Foundation’s annual Gala was held in June 2023 at the historic Rainbow Room in New York City. We were honored to recognize Dina Powell McCormick (Young Leader 2005) and Yves-André Istel (Member of the FAF-US Board of Directors) for their leadership and contributions to French-American friendship. We extend sincere thanks to all friends, supporters and collaborators of our efforts to promote French-American understanding, including our Board of Directors, corporate and individual sponsors, and sister foundation, the FrenchAmerican Foundation – France.The French-American Foundation – United States, in partnership with the French-American Foundation – France, works to strengthen the Franco-American alliance, fostering friendship and understanding through dialogue.
